Chapter 16

DYLAN AND I STOOD ON separate sides of the office, neither one of us giving any ground.

“I’m sorry...” he said slowly, trying to gauge my reaction. “I just figured that since we were going to be married for a year, we might as well do it in a place that would count.”

Wait a second! He thought that even after what the lawyer said, we were still going to go through with this? That we weren’t planning on calling the whole thing off?

I was about to say as much when the last words he said ran back through my mind.

“In a place that would count?” My eyes narrowed as my arms folded tightly across my chest. “What is that supposed to mean?”

His eyes flickered automatically to the big city skyline before returning to me. “Rose, this is New York we’re talking about. As opposed to Wessler. It’s not really a competition.”

“No, Dylan,” I fired back, “I don’t think it’s a competition either.”

I’d take my popsicles and sunshine over giant-sized subway rats any day.

His lips parted in frustration, but he didn’t surrender an inch of ground. To be fair, in this room—maybe even in this city, I thought he might be physically incapable of compromise.

“I...can’t tell if you’re being serious,” he finally admitted, carefully slowing the speed of conversation as he gestured graciously to one of the chairs. “Why don’t we just—”

“What is that?” I snapped. “The ‘psychology of persuasion?’ Are you trying to convince me with one of your pretentious books? You know perfectly well that I’m being serious. Please, don’t pander to me—I’m not one of your employees.”

His eyes flashed, but he struggled to rein it in. After the first course, right? It was still in there somewhere. “Rose, you see my life here.”

“And you know everything about mine?”

“I’m the head of a billion-dollar corporation!” he shouted, throwing up his hands as his temper finally got the better of him. “You’re just...”

He caught himself before the axe could fall, but the damage was done. I flinched back like he had slapped me, my eyes filling with angry tears before going simultaneously dry. If there was one thing I wasn’t going to do in this power-hungry office, it was cry.

“I’m going home,” I said quietly, gathering my purse and heading to the door, “this was a bad idea. Sorry to interrupt your day.”

“Rose, hang on!” he called, but I was already halfway to the lobby.

He rushed after me through the two sitting rooms and back down the hall. There was another mild explosion as we stormed past the trio of receptionists, but for whatever reason, I had no trouble tuning them out this time as I pounded angrily at the button to the elevator.

All this money, you’d think the thing would be wired just for him.

“Rosie—” he tried again, pulling out Tommy’s affectionate nickname like a Hail Mary in lieu of the fact that he was seemingly unable to apologize for trivializing my entire life’s work.

“Don’t call me that.” I pounded even harder on the button.
